“Having been involved in a lot of different liberal groups over time, as somebody who is roughly to the Left of Mao…”
Thus self-described Rachel Maddow a while back. While she may have intended the remark as humor, as the late Danish and American comedian and pianist Victor Borge liked to point out, “humor is truth.” Borge wasn’t alone in zeroing in on the real meaning of humor. All the way back there in 1905 Sigmund Freud published his book Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious in which the world’s famous father of psychoanalysis discussed the the psychoanalysis of jokes and humor. Jokes, he said, were a method of expressing a truth that was deemed to stark to say in polite society and was thus repressed and outed from the unconscious in the form of humor.
Well. Okay then. Got it Sig.
Applying Freud to Maddow or even Borge to Maddow and her self-description of being “to the Left of Mao” – which elicited polite laughs from her clearly uncomfortable guests – says a great deal about the unconscious mindset of the MSNBC host. Recall these words from Mao at the meeting of the Central Committee of the Seventh Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in March 1949 as detailed in The Black Book of Communism:
“After our armed enemies have been crushed, there will still be our unarmed enemies, who will try to fight us to the death. We must never underestimate their strength. Unless we think of the problem in precisely those terms, we will commit the gravest of errors.”
This understood, one can only wonder who the Mao-admiring Rachel views as the Left’s “unarmed enemies.” Since her MSNBC show is cable-casted to an audience of Americans one must naturally assume that in fact Rachel detests a good portion of the American people – beginning with the 63 or so million who voted for President Trump. They are, to quote her hero, the “unarmed enemies” of the American Left. That would be before she even gets to Trump himself or Fox News or conservative talk radio.
And sure enough, the lefties at the far left Daily Kos instantly lasered in on exactly that Mao-style contempt Rachel has for those of her fellow Americans who are Trump voters. The headline:
Rachel Maddow: Poll Reveals Trump Voters Live in Alternate State of Reality
The piece but of course quotes Rachel directly from her December 8, 2016 show. Says the Mao disciple of a PPP poll released to MSNBC:
“I think it shows that even after the election, what Trump voters believe about the world is distinctively different from what the rest of the country believe,” Rachel said. “And from what is true. And this is an alternate reality that they are in, — it is weird enough and specific enough that you can’t say it just springs from broader a misunderstandings or from a broader ignorance on issues that afflicts the country. And this is a specific alternate reality that was created by the Trump movement for a political purpose. And it worked for that political purpose. And now as the Trump administration takes shape, they have to know that they are in power thanks to their voter base that has these false beliefs about the country. False beliefs about the country, false beliefs about the economy, false beliefs about the outgoing president, false beliefs about what California is. In terms of what happens next in our country, it seems important to know this incoming president basically created this fantasy life for his supporters.”
Understood? In a propaganda-style worthy of Mao himself Rachel looks the American people in the eye and says 63 million of them have “false beliefs about the country. False beliefs about the country, false beliefs about the economy, false beliefs about the outgoing president, false beliefs about what California is. In terms of what happens next in our country, it seems important to know this incoming president basically created this fantasy life for his supporters.”
One can only wonder if she understands the reality of hard truths like this one headlined as follows:
Remembering that this news was coming from the Obama Department of Labor and its Bureau of Labor Statistics CNS reported it this way:
“…..the labor force participation rate has deteriorated over Obama’s two terms.
When Obama took office in January 2009, shortly before the recession ended, the labor force participation rate was 65.7 percent. The following month, it reached an Obama-era high of 65.8 percent, and then it began its seven-year downward spiral, hitting 62.4 percent in September 2015, its lowest point since 1977.”
And food stamps? When Obama took office there were approximately 30 million Americans in need of food stamps. By 2015 the number had increased to almost 50 million.
There’s more. Yet those two seriously ignored-by-Rachel realities has Rachel trying to tell America that Trump voters – Trump voters! – had false beliefs about the economy.
Somewhere in hell Rachel’s hero Chairman Mao – he one of the world’s great propagandists – must be smiling at her efforts to convince Americans of things that are not true.
